AFNIC has announced that the .fr extension has just reached over 3 million registrations! The organization, which regulates the registration of French domain names, reveals that 2016 has seen a 2.1% growth.
If we compare the French extension to the other 334.6 million internet domain names, this represents less than 1%! However, .com dominates the market representing half of all registered domain names. France holds tenth position amongst national top-level domain extensions, just after Australia. In Europe, .fr is fourth in terms of the volume of registered domain names.
The growth of .fr is linked to the simplified domain name registration rules introduced by AFNIC. In addition, the French Network Information Center has worked to promote this extension since 1999. Made in France is on a roll, and both individuals and companies have confidence in the .fr extension when registering their domain name.
For Mathieu Weill, AFNIC’s General Manager,
“ Owning a .fr domain name is one of the keys to a successful online presence, for companies as well as for individuals. To guide them in their Internet development, AFNIC has set up the Reussir-en.fr program (www.reussir-en.fr) and aims to pursue these initiatives in order to ensure that France is a European leader in online presence
AFNIC also welcomes the involvement of all French Internet operators. At YouDot we believe in the success of .fr and work hard to promote the use of the French extension in the registration of expired domain names. That is why, in 2016, Tristan Colombet, the founder of YouDot, was nominated AFNIC administrator.
